It took me several more years to complete the book, including more experiences around the world in order to have enough stories to write a book, but I would say that it all started with the Shipibo in the Upper Peruvian Amazon. My 3 trips to the Amazon really opened my mind to the connection between music as a spiritual vehicle and its connection to the natural environment. That was a magical experience and it really made me want to write a book about these kinds of musical systems that are so different from what we think of as “music” in the Western, capitalist world.
